Madame Bovary  – The novel follows the life of Emma Bovary, a young woman with a head full of romantic ideals gleaned from novels she read while at a convent. Trapped in a mundane marriage to Charles Bovary, a well-meaning but dull country doctor, and bored with the banality of provincial life, Emma seeks to escape her situation. She pursues extravagant spending sprees and engages in adulterous affairs with two men, the wealthy landowner Rodolphe Boulanger and a young law clerk named Léon Dupuis, hoping to find the passion and fulfillment that her marriage lacks.
