The Tempest

The Tempest  – The play begins with a violent sea storm (the “tempest”) conjured by Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan. Twelve years prior, Prospero was usurped by his brother Antonio, with the aid of Alonso, King of Naples, and set adrift at sea with his young daughter, Miranda. They landed on a magical island where Prospero used his books to master sorcery. He enslaved the island’s original inhabitant, the monstrous Caliban, and rescued a spirit named Ariel, who now serves him.
