Sons and Lovers – by English author D.H. Lawrence. Widely considered his first masterpiece, it is a semi-autobiographical work that explores the complex emotional bonds between a mother and her sons within a working-class mining community in Nottinghamshire. Gertrude Morel, a refined woman trapped in an unhappy marriage with a hard-drinking coal miner, Walter Morel, focuses all her emotional energy and ambition on her sons. After the death of her eldest son, William, she forms an intensely possessive relationship with her second son, Paul.
