The Taming of The Shrew

The Taming of The Shrew  – The central story, set in Padua, concerns the wealthy merchant Baptista Minola and his two daughters, the beautiful and mild Bianca, and the headstrong, “shrewish” Katherina. Bianca has many eager suitors, but Baptista declares Bianca cannot marry until the difficult Katherina is wed first.  A gentleman from Verona named Petruchio arrives in Padua and, hearing of Katherina’s substantial dowry, decides to court her. He uses an unconventional “taming” strategy, matching her sharp wit and asserting that her harsh words are gentle and kind. Despite Katherina’s initial resistance, Petruchio secures her hand in marriage and humiliates her at their wedding by arriving late and in absurd clothing.
