To The Lighthouse

To The Lighthouse  – The novel uses a stream-of-consciousness technique to explore the inner lives of the Ramsay family and their guests at their summer home on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.  Set on a single day before World War I, this section focuses on the domestic dynamics and internal monologues of the characters. Six-year-old James Ramsay desperately wants to visit the nearby lighthouse. His maternal mother, Mrs. Ramsay, assures him they will go if the weather is fine, but his rationalist father, Mr. Ramsay, bluntly insists the weather will be poor. This small disagreement highlights the larger emotional gap between the parents.
