Great Expectations

Great Expectations – is Charles Dickens’s renowned thirteenth novel, a classic bildungsroman (coming-of-age story) first published serially in 1860-1861. The story chronicles the life of an orphan named Pip as he navigates social ambition, love, wealth, and moral redemption in Victorian England. The novel follows the life of Pip (Philip Pirrip), an orphan who lives in the marshlands of Kent with his hot-tempered older sister and her kind-hearted blacksmith husband, Joe Gargery. The story begins dramatically when young Pip encounters an escaped convict, Abel Magwitch, in a churchyard and is forced to bring him food and tools.
