Silas Marner

Silas Marner – is a Victorian novel by George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans), first published in 1861. It is one of Eliot’s most admired works, celebrated for its realism and its portrayal of a vanished rural England on the cusp of the Industrial Revolution. In his youth, Silas lived in an urban religious community called Lantern Yard. He was falsely accused of theft by his best friend, William Dane, who also married Silas’s fiancée. Shattered by this betrayal and the loss of his faith in God and man, Silas moved to the rural village of Raveloe.
