Description
A Passage to India – Adela Quested and Mrs. Moore arrive in the fictional city of Chandrapore to visit Ronny Heaslop, Mrs. Moore’s son and Adela’s fiancé. They wish to see the “real India”. At a mosque, Mrs. Moore meets Dr. Aziz, a Muslim doctor, and they form an immediate, respectful connection. Meanwhile, the local British community remains largely segregated and arrogant toward the Indian population. Aziz organizes a trip for the women to the Marabar Caves. Inside the caves, Mrs. Moore is overwhelmed by a terrifying echo and claustrophobia, leading her to experience an existential crisis. Adela, alone in a different cave, also becomes disoriented and panics. She flees the hills and accuses Aziz of attempted sexual assault. Aziz is arrested, causing a massive racial and political rift in Chandrapore. During the trial, Adela realizes she was mistaken—experiencing a “muddle” in the cave—and withdraws the charges. Aziz is acquitted but left embittered against the British.
