A Portrait of The Artist As A Young Man  – The novel begins with Stephen’s earliest sensory memories and follows him to Clongowes Wood College. He is a sensitive, observant boy who struggles to fit in with his peers and is deeply affected by his family’s heated political and religious arguments. As his family’s financial situation declines and they move to Dublin, Stephen enters Belvedere College. He begins a period of rebellion, squandering school prize money and seeking out prostitutes, which leads to a deep sense of spiritual guilt.
