Adam Bede

Adam Bede  – a virtuous and hardworking carpenter, is deeply in love with Hetty Sorrel, a beautiful but vain and shallow dairymaid. Hetty, however, is infatuated with Captain Arthur Donnithorne, the young heir to the local estate, hoping he will marry her and elevate her social status. Adam discovers Arthur and Hetty together in the woods and, after a fight, forces Arthur to write a letter to Hetty ending their affair. Arthur leaves for his militia, and a heartbroken Hetty eventually agrees to marry Adam.
