Description
Anandamath – The novel is set against the backdrop of the devastating Great Bengal famine of 1770 and the subsequent Sannyasi Rebellion against the East India Company. The plot centers on Mahendra and Kalyani, a couple who get separated during the famine. Mahendra is found by a group of warrior monks (the ‘Santans’ or “Children of the Mother Earth”) led by Satyananda, who are dedicated to liberating their motherland from foreign oppression. Mahendra joins the austere order, which operates from a hidden abbey, and participates in their armed uprising against the British and the ruling Muslim Nawab of Murshidabad. The novel culminates in a battle where the Sannyasi soldiers achieve a victory, though the narrative ultimately suggests that British rule is a temporary necessity for India to achieve self-governance and overcome internal divisions.
