Arms and the Man

Arms and the Man – is a celebrated three-act “anti-romantic” comedy by George Bernard Shaw, first produced in 1894. It remains one of Shaw’s most popular works for its sharp wit and satire on the romanticized ideals of war and love. The story begins when Captain Bluntschli, a Swiss mercenary fighting for the Serbian army, escapes a battlefield and takes refuge in the bedroom of Raina Petkoff. Raina is shocked to find he carries chocolates instead of ammunition, leading her to dub him her “chocolate cream soldier”.
