Don Quixote

Don Quixote  – The story follows Alonso Quixano (later renamed Don Quixote) and his practical squire, Sancho Panza, as they journey across the Spanish countryside in search of adventure to revive chivalry and justice. Throughout their adventures, the pragmatic Sancho Panza acts as a foil to his master’s idealism. In the second part of the novel, the characters they meet have read the first part, adding a layer of metafiction. The novel takes a more melancholic turn as a Duke and Duchess play elaborate, often cruel, pranks on the pair. Sancho is even made governor of a fictional “island” (a town), where he proves surprisingly wise but eventually gives up the post.
