Great Expectations  – The story begins on the Kent marshes where young Pip lives with his hot-tempered sister and her kind-hearted husband, the blacksmith Joe Gargery. While visiting his parents’ graves on Christmas Eve, Pip is accosted by an escaped convict, Abel Magwitch, who demands food and a file to remove his leg irons. Pip complies, and though Magwitch is later recaptured, he never forgets Pip’s kindness.Soon after, Pip is summoned to play at Satis House, the decaying home of the eccentric Miss Havisham, who remains in her wedding dress decades after being jilted at the altar. There, he falls in love with her adopted daughter, Estella, a beautiful but cold-hearted girl trained by Miss Havisham to break men’s hearts. Ashamed of his humble roots, Pip dreams of becoming a “gentleman” to win Estella’s favor.
