Macbeth

Macbeth – Macbeth is undoubtedly one of Shakespeare’s most outstanding plays. It is not the greatest treasure of English dramatic literature, as a critic thinks ; nor is it the most glorious of Shakespeare’s plays, as another says. But it is a fascinating work and it keeps us spell-bound throughout. Its most striking quality is its psychological depth, and it is remarkable for the character of lady Macbeth. Its varied and highly imaginative imagery is another of its noteworthy qualities. And there is of course, its great poetry. This edition of the play is intended to meet the examination requirements of advanced students of English Literature at Indian Universities. There is another purpose behind this edition: to enhance and heighten the student’s appreciation of a great play by the greatest of all English playwrights.
