Description
Man and Superman – The play is a four-act “drama of ideas” that subverts traditional romantic tropes, presenting woman as the hunter and man as the prey in the “love-chase”. the death of Mr. Whitefield, his daughter Ann Whitefield is left under the dual guardianship of the conservative, elderly Roebuck Ramsden and the radical, socialist John “Jack” Tanner. While Octavius Robinson is in love with Ann, she has secretly set her sights on the reluctant Tanner. Tanner’s chauffeur, Henry Straker (the “New Man” of the technological age), alerts Tanner that Ann is not pursuing Octavius, but is actually hunting him. Terrified of losing his freedom to marriage, Tanner flees to Europe in his motorcar.
