Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost  – Lewis famously rejects the Romantic view (held by poets like Blake and Shelley) that Satan is a hero. He argues that Satan is a representation of tyranny and rebellion driven by personal grievance. Lewis describes a “progressive degradation” of Satan throughout the poem: moving from a magnificent general to a secret agent, then a peeping Tom, a toad, and finally a mute snake.
