Sea of Poppies

Sea of Poppies  – The story is divided into three parts: land, river, and sea. It begins in the poppy fields of the Ganges, where peasants are forced to grow opium instead of staple crops, leading to debt and poverty. The narrative then converges on the ship Ibis, an old slaving ship refitted to carry indentured laborers (coolies and convicts) to the sugar estates of Mauritius. A diverse cast of characters from different backgrounds and social strata is brought together by fate and the colonial system.
