Sons and Lovers

Sons and Lovers  – The story begins with the unhappy marriage of Gertrude Coppard, a refined and educated woman, and Walter Morel, a rough and uneducated coal miner. As their initial physical passion fades due to class differences and Walter’s drinking and dishonesty, Gertrude’s affections shift to her sons. She is particularly devoted to her eldest son, William, who eventually moves to London and dies of an illness, leaving his mother heartbroken. Her emotional focus then shifts to her second son, Paul.
