The Mill on the Floss – is the second full-length novel by George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans). Renowned for its psychological realism and evocative depiction of 19th-century rural English life, it is widely considered her most autobiographical work. Maggie is highly intelligent and impulsive, but her academic interests are dismissed because of her gender. Tom, though less scholarly, is sent to school while Maggie is expected to fulfill traditional domestic roles.
