Description
Tom Brown’s Schooldays – The story begins with Tom Brown’s childhood in the Vale of White Horse and his initial experiences at a local school. At the age of eleven, he is transferred to Rugby School, a boys’ public school, which serves as the primary setting for his coming-of-age story. Upon arrival, Tom is befriended by a more experienced boy, Harry “Scud” East. Together, they navigate the challenges of school life, including dealing with the vicious school bully, Flashman, whom they eventually defeat with help from an older student, Diggs. The latter part of the novel focuses on Tom’s mentorship of George Arthur, a frail, sensitive, and pious new boy. Through this friendship and the overarching moral influence of Dr. Arnold, Tom develops a stronger sense of integrity, leadership, and Christian values, transforming from a mischievous boy into a responsible young man. The novel ends with Tom’s emotional return to the school chapel after hearing of Dr. Arnold’s death.
