Voices in the City

Voices in the City – is a celebrated novel written by Anita Desai, not M.K. Srivastava. M.K. Srivastava is the author of a study guide/critical analysis of Desai’s novel, titled Narain’s Voices In The City: Anita Desai. The novel is set in Calcutta (Kolkata) during a period of social transition in India, exploring themes of urban alienation, existential despair, and the search for identity among middle-class intellectuals. The city itself is portrayed as a “monster city” that profoundly affects the characters’ psychological states.
